Home-School Partnership Programme

Our Home-School Partnership programme empowers parents and care-givers of children aged between 3 and 7 years to support informal learning in the home. We provide training and ongoing mentoring to facilitators on how to set up and run a series of two-hour workshops over a period of seven weeks for groups of about twenty-five parents and care-givers. The weekly workshops equip parents with the knowledge, skills and confidence to support the literacy and language development of their children.
It is our experience that parents are eager to help their children, but often do not have the necessary knowledge and skills. Through our workshops, parents and care-givers who may have missed out on educational opportunities themselves, learn to support their children’s learning through practical activities, building on whatever positive strategies they are already using. Parents are provided with fun and user- friendly resources that they can continue to use in the home context. These ‘learning kits’ include crayons, a book for writing and drawing, small handmade books, handouts and games.
The Home-School Partnership programme seeks to create a positive, nurturing space for women to share ideas and ask questions. It does not aim to impose a set of ideals or an educational framework on parents and communities, but rather to inspire parents to support their children to fulfil their true learning potential.
In these ways, the programme not only helps to foster a culture of learning among families, but also helps to build stronger relationships between pre-schools/ schools and the families they serve. Most importantly, by equipping parents with appropriate skills and resources, this programme builds confidence and self-reliance, and a sense of purpose and community among the beneficiaries.

“Before I was scared to help my son with schoolwork, but now we both enjoy working together. He now even asks me to do some schoolwork because you taught us how to make learning more exciting for him. Even my hubby is joining in helping our son building words. Thank you very much.” Wordworks parent.
