Early literacy specialist
Eugene (Gene) is a veteran in the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Sector, who started as a para-professional at the age of 17, teaching in schools in various provinces. After 16 years, she joined the NGO sector, working as an Educare Advisor at Grassroots Education Trust. She was also part of an activist group who fought for recognition of their qualifications, and an opportunity to complete a diploma in Early Childhood Development. Shortly after her husband’s death, Gene resumed her studies and matriculated with her youngest daughter, and then went on to complete her diploma in ECD. In 1993 she joined the Early Learning Resource Unit as a Distance Trainer, to travel to remote areas of SA to teach and mentor ECD Teachers. She also joined the Management Team of ELRU to provide leadership and capacity building. Gene’s passion for ECD has exposed her to national and international travel to other ECD Centres of Excellence. It has also exposed her to other fields of study such as M&E, HIV & Aids, and Anti-racism.
