Back on Track with Home-School Partnerships in the Western Cape

Donor: Western Cape Education Department
Partners: Western Cape Education Department and YearBeyond Youth Service partnership
Duration: 2025
Location: Cape Winelands, Metro South, Metro Central, Metro North, Metro East, West Coast in the Western Cape

Project model:
Wordworks has trained 25 retired teachers to facilitate parent workshops for 750 parents of Grade 4 learners who receive tutoring as part of the WCED’s intervention. As a credible and long standing partner working in the province, Wordworks was selected as the choice partner to support parent work in the province through the collaboration between the YearBeyond office and Western Cape Education Department.

Sustaining the intervention:
Learning and insights from this pilot may inform plans for future parent work in the province. In addition, Department officials will become members of Wordworks online programme network, granting them access to resources, courses and programme support systems. Trained parents will be invited to access additional resources on Workworks online platform to develop young children’s literacy skills at home.

Research and Result:
The Home-School Partnership (HSP) programme has been one of Wordworks’ flagship programmes since 2006. While we have not had funding for a large external evaluation, a number of studies and reflections have been done. We hope that by collecting them together here we create a rich and textured narrative of the interesting and important work that has been done using HSP.
