Celebrating 20 Years of learning, partnership, and impact
On 21 November 2025, we gathered with friends, partners, funders, and long-time supporters to celebrate a milestone that means so much to us – 20 years of Wordworks. Our anniversary Gala Dinner was a heartfelt reflection on the journey we’ve taken since 2005, and on the many people and communities who have made this work possible.
Held in Kelvin Grove, Cape Town, the evening captured the warmth, colour, and spirit of Wordworks. It was a moment to pause, honour our roots, and recognise all those who have contributed to strengthening early language and literacy in under-resourced communities across South Africa.
A special highlight of the evening was the recognition of 20 remarkable honourees: individuals and organisations whose dedication and partnership have been instrumental in Wordworks’ journey. Each honouree has played a unique role, from supporting caregivers and teachers, to championing early literacy in communities, to sustaining programmes that touch thousands of young lives.
We were honoured to welcome Professor Thuli Madonsela as our keynote speaker. Her message powerfully tied together justice, dignity, and early learning. She reminded us that, “remedying a broken child is far more expensive than just doing the right thing from the start.” Her words echoed through the room, reinforcing the urgency and value of building strong early foundations.

Our Executive Director, Mammuso Makhanya, reflected on the journey of the organisation and the partnerships that have shaped it, saying:
“This is not just our anniversary – it is a celebration of the thousands of women, caregivers, teachers, and partners who have made Wordworks what it is today. Our work is a reminder that when we stand together for young children, we create possibilities that last a lifetime.”
Throughout the evening, guests shared memories, reconnected with colleagues, and reflected on the impact of our programme. It was a celebration not just of achievement, but of the collective effort that has brought us here.
As we step into our next chapter, we remain committed to expanding our reach and deepening our support for those who teach, care for, and raise young children. This milestone is a tribute to every partner, practitioner, and supporter who has shaped our story and a reminder that we go further when we go together.
