Wordworks is proud to release a series of publications about the Yizani Sifunde early literacy project, implemented in the Eastern Cape from 2021 to 2023 through collaboration with Book Dash, Nal’ibali, Khululeka, and ITEC—an initiative focused on delivering early literacy programs and supporting language development in early childhood.

Exploring the impact of a collaborative, multi-pronged early literacy intervention on 4- and 5-year-olds
Wordworks is proud to be able to release a series of publications about the Yizani Sifunde early literacy project, which was implemented in the Eastern Cape between 2021 and 2023, in a collaboration between Wordworks, Book Dash and Nal’ibali and with local partners Khululeka and ITEC. The project was made possible by the Liberty Community Trust. The project was based on Wordworks’ Little Stars programme* for ECD classrooms and also included caregiver workshops based on the Every Word Counts programme*.
The series is entitled Exploring the impact of a collaborative, multi-pronged early literacy intervention on 4- and 5-year-olds, and includes the results of a comprehensive independent evaluation run by Social Impact Insights Africa.
The series consists of:
• An overview infographic that summarises in 4 pages the project design and the main evaluation findings.
• Brief 1: The design of a multi-pronged intervention for early literacy
• Brief 2: Lessons from a successful multi-NGO collaboration
• Brief 3: An effective approach to closing the early literacy gap
• Brief 4: How a multi-pronged intervention strengthened teaching and learning in ECD centres
• Brief 5: Impact beyond the classroom: shifts in homes and communities
The infographic was produced by Katie Huston with graphics by Skyboy Design.
The briefs were written by Dr Magali von Blottnitz with input from the team and editing & graphic support from Katie Huston and Skyboy Design.
