Gr R capacity building programme in Mpumalanga

Donor: Roger Federer Foundation, Get It Done Foundation
Partners: Penreach, RED INK, Trackosaurus and Mpumalanga Department of Education
Duration: 2025-2027
Location: Ehlanzeni, Gert Sibande, Nkangala, and Bohlabela education districts
Project model:
In collaboration with three NGOs and in partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Education, the project aims to improve Gr R education in the province over 3 years. Wordworks manages resource- based training on the Gr R home language component, while RED INK is responsible for Gr R maths training and resources. Penreach leads a tablet- based initiative providing tools to support early learning, including child monitoring systems and promoting community involvement in ensuring schools are in a better position to receive young children. Game – based assessment tools to track learner development are being piloted by Trackosaurus. The project follows a train -the- trainer model, equipping education department officials together with Penreach change agents to train and support teachers on the Gr R classroom programmes and tablet-based learning. Approximately 2200 Gr R teachers will benefit from teacher training, classroom resources and digital tools over the three year intervention.
Sustaining the intervention:
Through established communities of practice and professional learning communities, the system is being capacitated to sustain the gains of the intervention. In addition, after the project period, trainers and teachers will become members of Wordworks online programme network, granting them access to resources, courses and on-going programme support systems.
Research and results:
We do not have evaluation results from this particular project but you may find it useful to look at these two learning briefs which unpack the approach taken to language teaching in the Stellar Programme.
