Home-School Partnerships in the Eastern Cape

Donor: Albert Wessels Trust
Partners: Khululeka Community Education Development (with Siyakholwa Development Foundation HQ), Little Seeds, Masinyusane Development Organisation, Rhodes University – CSD
Duration: 2025
Location: Amathole West, Chris Hani West, Chris Hani East, Nelson Mandela Bay, Sarah Baartman districts in the Eastern Cape

Project model:
Through a Training of Trainer model, Wordworks has partnered with well- established organisations in the Eastern Cape to train 100 Grade R and Grade 1 teachers to conduct workshops for parents of children in the Foundation Phase. Trainers are equipped to train and support teachers on the Home School Partnerships Programme which provides the opportunity for schools to strengthen their partnership with parents/ caregivers to support informal learning in the home. Over 3000 TIME Home Learning materials were distributed to complement the parent workshops by providing quality resources for parents to use with their children at home.

Sustaining the intervention:
In order to sustain the gains of the intervention after the project period, trained partners and teachers will become members of Wordworks online programme network, granting them access to resources, courses and ongoing programme support systems.

Research and Result:
The Home-School Partnership (HSP) programme has been one of Wordworks’ flagship programmes since 2006. While we have not had funding for a large external evaluation, a number of studies and reflections have been done. We hope that by collecting them together here we create a rich and textured narrative of the interesting and important work that has been done using HSP.
