Mayikhule Project brings teachers and parents together in the Eastern Cape

21/05/2025

Earlier in 2025, Wordworks trained partners on the Home School Partnerships programme. In a ‘train the trainer’ model, Wordworks equipped partners to train teachers. Teachers in turn ran workshops with parents and caregivers at their school to support informal learning at home, including the use of the TIME home learning activities. Through the Mayikhule Project, these teachers are now empowering parents with practical tools to support their children’s early learning at home.

Samuel Ntsiko Primary School, in partnership with Rhodes University Centre for Social Development (CSD), recently hosted the first parent session using Wordworks’ HSP and TIME programmes. The event highlighted the power of collaboration between schools, communities, and partner organisations in promoting early literacy and numeracy development.

By working closely with universities, schools, and grassroots organisations like Rhodes CSD, Wordworks combines research-based approaches with tailored strategies for each community. Early support in literacy and numeracy at home significantly boosts children’s school readiness and long-term learning outcomes. Training teachers to engage parents effectively ensures children benefit from consistent learning opportunities both at school and at home. Through initiatives like HSP and TIME, Wordworks strengthens connections between schools, homes, and communities, ensuring children gain the foundational skills in language and literacy they need to thrive.
