Sharing early literacy strategies with teachers at EMDC East
24/06/2025
Wordworks presented practical strategies for early literacy at Professional Learning Community (PLC) sessions hosted by the Western Cape Education Department’s EMDC East. The sessions brought together around 150 Grade R teachers from three circuits to explore the STELLAR Home Language Programme.

The sessions created an atmosphere of enthusiasm, collaboration, and professional growth. Educators exchanged ideas and deepened their understanding of early literacy practices while the Wordworks team demonstrated story-based approaches to strengthen children’s language skills. Teachers left with tools and confidence to bring literacy lessons to life for children aged 5–6 years.
Feedback from the Foundation Phase coordinator and participating teachers was especially encouraging. One teacher shared that the strategies would help her better engage children and foster language development in creative and meaningful ways.
This experience highlighted the power of community-driven professional learning in supporting teachers, improving teaching practices, and ultimately building stronger foundations for young children’s literacy and learning.
At Wordworks, we are proud to walk alongside educators in their journey of growth, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive.
