This assessment is designed to give a picture of a young child’s early literacy development from mid-Grade R to the end of Grade 1. It includes measures of listening comprehension, letter-sound knowledge, awareness of sounds in words, emergent writing, word reading and story writing. It can be used by anyone who has some experience of working with young children and does not require any special qualifications.

The WELA manual includes instructions for assessing children, scoring guidelines, answer sheets and word/picture cards.

Little books can be used to build children’s identity as readers, to support emergent reading behaviours and to involve parents in their children’s literacy development.

Very few children in South Africa grow up with books in their homes. The little books are designed to be a cost-effective way of getting books into children’s hands. The magic of the little books is that they can be taken home and shared with family members. Children love to show how they can ‘read’ what is written on the page, even if they are just saying words from memory. When they read to others, their confidence grows!
