Wordworks celebrates Nelson Mandela Day 2023

July 2023

On 18 July 2023, Nelson Mandela Day, the Wordworks team spent the day assembling gifts for children attending our Early Literacy Festivals in Worcester and Cape Town. These included books and educational resources for parents and caregivers, supporting early literacy development.

Reflecting on the day, Wordworks Director Mammuso Makhanya shared what Nelson Mandela Day meant to her and the organisation:
“The 18th of July is always a special day here at Wordworks, as we remember our founding father, Nelson Mandela. He taught us to do our best and to give to others without expecting anything in return. He once said there can be no greater gift than giving one’s time and energy to help others without expecting anything back. That is a motto we strive to uphold, and every year we do our best to honour his legacy.

On this day, our team wholeheartedly gave of their time and effort, joyfully putting together crafts and resources that support early literacy development. It was not only fun but also deeply meaningful, as it tied directly into our mission to change lives through early literacy. For us at Wordworks, honouring Mandela is not just about one day – it’s about how we live, what we give, and how we continue to learn every single day.”

The day served as a powerful reminder that small acts of service – especially those that promote education – can help carry forward Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy.
