Wordworks celebrates Nelson Mandela Day in Khayelitsha

23/07/2025

On Nelson Mandela Day 2025, the Wordworks team spent time in Khayelitsha supporting young children’s learning through storytelling, painting, and creative play. These activities helped children build early literacy skills, language development, and confidence in expressing themselves.

In the spirit of Madiba’s legacy, Wordworks engaged with both children and educators. Early Literacy Specialist Lydia Mkiva brought stories to life, while goodie bags filled with books, toys, and educational resources sparked joy and curiosity among the children.

The team was also joined by Charles Mokoena, a Grade R teacher from Dirk Boshoff Primary School and recipient of the Excellence in Teaching District Award, who had long used Wordworks’ literacy programmes in his classroom.

Each Mandela Day reminded the team of Madiba’s call to action: small acts of time and care can help build stronger communities. The visit highlighted Wordworks’ ongoing commitment to supporting early childhood literacy programmes, language development activities, and educational resources for parents and caregivers.

Investing in early literacy went beyond teaching children to read – it empowered them to think critically, express themselves, and engage confidently with the world. By sharing stories, playing, and learning together, Wordworks demonstrated how small, thoughtful actions can create lasting impact.
